Office Add-ins community call - April 11, 2018

The Office Add-ins community call is our quarterly event for developers to connect in real-time with the folks who are building the Office Add-ins platform and JavaScript APIs. During this call, we share updates about new Office JavaScript APIs and provide tips about useful tools, samples, and resources for developing Office Add-ins. Additionally, each call features a technical deep dive on a specific topic and provides an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and share feedback.

 

April’s call featured these topics:

  • Sudhi Ramamurthy, Sr. Program Manager, Office Platform team presented an overview of the Office Add-ins platform and provided a look at some of the new functionality in Excel API requirement set 1.7 that will be made available on the production CDN any day now.
  • Doug Mahugh, Sr. Dev Writer on the Office Developer Experience team, and Tong Jiang, Software Engineer in the Office product group, discussed some of the work we’ve done recently to improve the performance of the Excel JavaScript APIs and described some programming techniques that you can use to optimize performance of the Excel JavaScript APIs.
  • Wey Love, Sr. Program Manager on the Office Platform team, provided a look at what’s new, coming soon, and on the roadmap for Outlook Add-ins.
  • Kim Brandl, Sr. Dev Writer on the Office Developer Experience team talked about some of the tools and resources available to Office Add-ins developers and provided information about how you can engage with members of the Office team about Office JavaScript API questions, issues, and feature requests.

What's the best way to get started learning the new dev workflows for Office Add-ins?
The Office Add-ins Documentation is an excellent source of information. In particular, the Overview, Quick Starts, and Tutorials are valuable resources for anyone who’s new to developing Office Add-ins. Also, when you’re ready to start exploring and testing out the Office JavaScript APIs, be sure to check out the samples in Script Lab.

Can you develop Office Add-ins without having a paid Office 365 account?
If you’re looking to develop Office Add-ins, consider joining the Office 365 Developer Program to get access to tools and resources that’ll help to streamline your development experience (including an Office 365 subscription, which is provided at no cost for a limited time).

What's the roadmap look like for PowerPoint APIs?
 Enhancements to the PowerPoint APIs are currently in our backlog, but we don’t have any specific details or dates that we can share at this time.

Range.select("End"); in Word for Mac ignores trailing new-lines (as described here). Is there a working workaround or will this be fixed?
Thank you for the reminder about this issue. The Office Platform team has confirmed that this bug is being investigated, but exact timeline for resolution is currently unknown.

Is it planned to support CoersionType.image (when using setSelectedAsync) in Excel Online?
We are planning to support shapes and the first shape will be images.

Is it possible to create an add-in activation rule based on a custom property?
No, this is not possible.

Is there any way to convert office docs to PDF without using interops, SharePoint on-premise solution and third-party components?
There is no new automation solution. However, from within an Office Add-in you can use the getFileAsync method, which supports file type PDF (amongst others).
