An Office Add-in runs in an Office application and can interact with data in a document or mail item.

An office add-in consists of a simple web application and a manifest.xml file. The web application can be hosted anywhere and can use the Office Javascript API to interact with the Office application. The manifest.xml file is registers the add-in with the host application and specifies properties such as where it should extend the Office UI.
